Frequently Asked Questions
We know there are always questions!
We want to be able to provide you with the best knowledge and support to help you make informed decisions.
What is Canine Physical Therapy? Canine physical therapy is human physical therapy applied to animals.
Does Pet insurance cover rehab? Yes! You will have to check with your specific insurance to make sure it is covered. Some insurance providers require services to be done by a vet or under vet supervision. Those animals will need to be seen at Waterloo Animal Hospital, if you want to submit to insurance.
Why is clinic the preferred option? While we like to provide the mobile option, it limits our ability to see other dogs. By coming to clinic, we are able to see more dogs, have more equipment options available, able to do more modalities, and have extra hands if needed. Oklahoma veterinary practice acts limits some treatments and modalities to be performed under direct vet supervision. Since I am not a vet, I cannot do them without the vet being in the building.
Can anyone provide Canine PT? No. In order for someone to provide canine PT, they must undergo some sort of certification or specialty training. Look for individuals who are Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) or Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioners (CCRP). These individuals have completed additional training in rehab specifically for animals.
What is the driving radius for mobile option? We do not have a specific driving radius. We have seen dogs in Enid, Stillwater, Shawnee, Newcastle, Norman as well as the OKC metro. Schedule and availability may limit options. Additional fees will be added for more than 35 mi from Waterloo Animal Hospital.
Do we have to do more visits after eval? No. We want to empower you to be able to help your pet get better. We never force you to buy more visits. However, the best outcomes are those who are seen for at least 4 additional visits as well as family doing the home exercise program. For this reason, we have created a package of evaluation + 4 visits at a discounted price.
Does this clinic have an Underwater Treadmill? No, we do not have an underwater treadmill. While underwater treadmill may be beneficial to some, it is only one tool in the toolbox. We do have a body weight support treadmill training system. Be sure and read about it in the Pet Owners Sections.
Why should we see you as PT instead of someone who is a Vet? My background is what makes me different. In my experience, veterinarians are great with pain management and modalities and tend to steer their practices that direction. My background as a PT is a much more hands on approach. The techniques used in rehab are the same as humans, just a different body and species. Dogs tend to like and I am not afraid of dogs who growl or snap at me. While I am not a DVM, I do work closely with them and have a clinic at Waterloo Animal Hospital.
What is the frequency of follow up visits? There are a lot of factors that go into that. How well is your pup moving around? Are they in significant pain? Are you physically able to do the home exercise program with them? Do they need extra hands or modalities not available at home? Do you have pet insurance? Are you able to afford continued therapy? Some dogs we see a few times a week, while others are weekly, once a month or once a quarter. Some we do evaluation only. We give you the recommendations, but ultimately, it is what is feasible for the owners.
