Our Programs

We offer a variety of programs. All programs are done by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT). We created these programs as ways to help reach more dogs and meet their specific needs in other forms. Canine Rehabilitation and alternative care is often covered by pet insurance. Check with your insurance provider to see if it is covered.

Canine Physical Therapy (Rehab/Rehabilitation)

Canine Physical therapy, rehab, and rehabilitation are used interchangeably in the veterinary world. It is taking human Physical Therapy concepts and translating them over to animals. There is a veterinary board certification for rehabilitation, but currently there are no board certified veterinarians in Oklahoma. However, there are a handful of veterinarians (DVMs), Physical Therapists (PTs) and other health professionals who have undergone additional training to specialize in rehabilitation for animals. When considering rehabilitation for you dog, be sure to look for individuals who are Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) or Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP). This program is for dogs (or pets) with known injuries or diseases. This program consists of an in-depth evaluation to determine the best path to recovery for your pup. The first visit is 60-90 minutes long and includes a hands on evaluation, treatment, hands-on training for owners, education and a home exercise program. This evaluation and subsequent treatments is more expensive because of the hands on nature and skills required for optimal outcomes. Each animal is different, so no two programs will look the exact same. We use all the appropriate modalities, skills, and tools to help “put the pep back in your pup’s step”. This may include manual therapy (stretching, range of motion, massage, myofascial release), Neuromuscular re-education (specialized techniques to improve nerve function and motor control), balance training, kinesiology taping (KT tape), exercises, body weight support treadmill training**, or modalities such as Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field therapy (PEMF)*, cold laser (LLLT)*, dry needling*, or electrical stimulation (NMES). The home exercise program (HEP) is always the most important aspect of care. Carryover and best results are seen when owners are doing exercises at home. We offer clinic option at Waterloo Animal Hospital and mobile option. The mobile option is more costly and certain components cannot be done due to the Oklahoma Veterinarian Practice Acts requiring direct vet supervision. We do not push you to continue rehab, although optimal results with several follow up visits. We do offer packages and payment plans. This also requires a script from a veterinarian or direct vet supervision.

Most follow-up treatments are 1 hour. 30 minute treatment sessions are available at clinic for more cost effective option or for dogs with lower activity tolerance.

Contact us for pricing! There is an additional fee for home visits more than 35 mi from office.

In addition to canine physical therapy, we are launching some new programs for wellness. This grew out of a few things I experienced with my own dogs. These Programs will only be available at Waterloo Animal Hospital, as they are only 30 minutes.

1. Aging Well Wellness Program: This program is designed specifically to help your dog maintain their mobility as they age. The first session is to meet you and your pup, identify key areas of concern, treat those areas, determine appropriate exercises and teach you the exercises to do at home. You will be given a Home Exercise Program within 48 hours the electronic version with videos and pictures will be sent to you via e-mail. Subsequent visits will be to re-visit the areas of concern and treat as needed, determine how exercises are going at home and modify or progress as needed. This is a less intensive and less in-depth than the canine rehabilitation program. If a more intensive program is warranted, canine rehab route will be encouraged.

2. Weight Management: This program is for dogs without known injuries who need to lose a few extra pounds. The initial visit will include weight, girth measurements, walking test, exercises, and walking program along with a nutrition plan. Subsequent 30 min sessions will focus on strength and endurance exercises. This may include body weight support treadmill training as appropriate and tolerated by the dog.

3. Pain Management: This program is a modalities based program. It is for people who do not want to do canine rehab but want alternatives to surgery or pharmaceutical options. Multiple modalities will be combined/utilized but will be based on injury , severity of injury and history (such as cancer, surgeries, etc). This program includes low level laser therapy (LLLT), Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF), dry needling, massage/myofascial release/craniosacral therapy. Up to 30 minutes. Script required or one-time assessment by on-site vet (additional fee by the clinic)
