Why Weight Bearing Matters: Helping Your Dog Rebuild Strength After Injury

When a dog is recovering from a neurological injury—such as IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE), degenerative myelopathy, or surgery—many owners focus on one question:

"When will my dog start walking again?"

While that's certainly the goal, the more important question is:

"How do we help the nervous system relearn how to walk?"

The answer often begins with something surprisingly simple:


Weight bearing.

Why standing matters

Every time your dog stands, their body is sending thousands of messages between the brain, spinal cord, muscles, and joints.

Specialized receptors in the feet, muscles, tendons, and joints constantly tell the nervous system things like:

  • Where each limb is in space

  • How much weight is being placed through each leg

  • Whether the body is balanced

  • How the muscles should respond

Think of it as your dog's internal GPS.

After a neurological injury, those signals can become weak, delayed, or interrupted. The nervous system has to relearn how to interpret them.

That's why simply lying down—even with lots of rest—won't fully restore function.

The nervous system needs safe, repetitive practice.


Use it...or lose it

Muscles begin to weaken surprisingly quickly when they aren't used.

But it's not just the muscles.

The brain also begins to "forget" efficient movement patterns if they aren't practiced.

The longer a limb goes without bearing weight, the harder it becomes to rebuild strength, coordination, and balance later.

This doesn't mean we should force dogs to walk before they're ready.

It means we should find safe ways to introduce weight bearing as early as medically appropriate.


What is body weight support training?

One of the most effective ways to do this is through body weight support training.

Instead of asking a weak dog to support 100% of their body weight, we provide just enough assistance to allow successful movement.

This may include:

  • A rehabilitation harness

  • A sling

  • An underwater treadmill

  • A therapist providing manual support

  • Other rehabilitation equipment designed to reduce the amount of weight the dog must carry

By reducing some of the load, the dog can practice normal movement patterns without becoming overwhelmed.


The goal isn't making it easier.

It's making it possible.

Imagine trying to do a squat while carrying twice your body weight.

Your movement would likely become slow, awkward, and unsafe.

Now imagine someone removed enough weight that you could perform the squat with good form.

That's what body weight support does for recovering dogs.

It allows the nervous system to practice the correct movement instead of reinforcing poor compensatory patterns.


Progressive overload: Getting stronger one step at a time

As your dog improves, we don't continue providing the same amount of support forever.

Instead, we gradually ask the body to do a little more.

This concept is called progressive overload, and it's one of the most important principles in rehabilitation.

Progressive overload simply means gradually increasing the challenge so the body continues adapting.

That might mean:

  • Standing a little longer

  • Taking a few more steps

  • Supporting a little less body weight

  • Walking over different surfaces

  • Adding balance challenges

  • Navigating small obstacles or cavaletti poles

  • Increasing endurance

These changes are made slowly and intentionally.

Too much, too soon can lead to fatigue, poor movement patterns, or even setbacks.

Too little challenge can slow recovery.

Finding the "just right" level is where rehabilitation professionals can make a tremendous difference.


Recovery isn't just about muscles

One of the biggest misconceptions is that rehabilitation is only about strengthening muscles.

In reality, we're training an entire system.

We're helping the brain...

Reconnect with the spinal cord...

Improve communication with the muscles...

Restore balance...

Rebuild coordination...

And improve confidence with movement.

Every successful repetition gives the nervous system another opportunity to learn.


Every dog progresses differently

Recovery is rarely a straight line.

Some days are better than others.

Some dogs progress rapidly, while others require months of consistent practice.

The important thing is that rehabilitation is individualized.

Exercises should be matched to your dog's diagnosis, current abilities, and stage of healing.

The goal isn't simply getting your dog moving.

It's helping them move well, safely, and with the greatest independence possible.

Weight bearing is far more than standing.

It's one of the primary ways the nervous system receives information needed to rebuild strength, coordination, and function.
